What the bible has to say about dreams and how do you feel about dreams? Do dreams actually exist? Should they be listened to or dismissed? Many people have various things to say regarding dreams. Others have voiced their perspectives on the matter, but the question now is: who can be believed? Well, only one piece of writing has endured through the ages. The Bible has been around since the beginning, is tried and true, and is still in force today.
Renowned English scientist, Isaac Newton had this to say about the Bible after his notable prowess in the field of science: “I find more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than any other profane history whatsoever”. In fact, he continued by stating his fundamental belief in the Bible’s status as the written word of God, authored by persons who were inspired, and that he regularly studies it. This demonstrates that science, which at first rejected the idea of God, has now discovered evidence supporting His presence. As a result, God’s word on any topic is worth hearing if the truth of it has been proven.
Since the Bible is the most reliable book, let us partake of its wisdom. The word DREAM appears 87times in the Bible and at different times for different people. The Bible has the following to say about dreams.
- God speaks to people through dreams
Job 33:14-15 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed (KJV)
This is not limited to God’s children as He could use it as warning to other people as in the case of Laban as seen in the books of Genesis.
Genesis 31:24
And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad(KJV)
A dream is actually a general way God uses to speak to people. It could be for directions, as warnings, revelation, and so on.
- Dreams are used by God in some instances to tell about the future.
Genesis 37:9-10 And he dreamed yet another dream, and (KJV told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? (KJV)
God used the dreams Joseph had to reveal to him his plans for him in future and this happens even now. When the dream came to fruition, he remembered it (Gen.42:9a). God leads us primarily by his word but sometimes He substantiates His purposes by helping us have a clear vision of it. Most times people can hold better what they see as it appears more tangible. However, God in His wisdom uses dreams to speak to people but is limited to dreams.
- Dreams have interpretation
Let us see a few instances. Gideon’s victory was first revealed in a dream and interpreted as such (Judges 7:13-14). The butler and Baker (Genesis 40:1-23). Nebuchadnezzar had a dream which troubled his Spirit (Daniel 4:5-9). However, it is very important to point out here that interpretations are not based on our senses, but as an inspiration from God and could be peculiar to a person or situation. The magicians and astrologers could not interpret it until Daniel showed up and gave the interpretation.
Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. (KJV)
It is important to know that dreams are real and to understand what message they are trying to pass across or if it is just thoughts on replay. Even if you have never dreamed before, it does not counter the fact about dreams. It is just an experience you have not come into.
